DENNIS BASSO | NYFW’19 FALL COLLECTION

Feb 12nd, 2019

Dennis Basso’s show was the only show on the fourth day of my New York Fashion Week (NYFW) schedule. After watching eight shows in the three days prior, I became a bit sloppy – sleeping in later, showing up a bit late to shows, and taking less time getting ready, as my excitement for NYFW began vanishing.

To be completely honest, I haven’t heard much about Dennis Basso but was invited to the show, so I decided to check him out. However, the moment I walked into his go-to show space at Cipriani Hotel on 42nd Street, I felt an enormous amount of excitement and energy in the room which brought back all of the motivation. Many media outlets were there, as well as countless photographers taking pictures of very well-dressed people, and anchors conducting interviews. I knew right away this must have been the biggest show I have ever attended during NYFW and I didn’t even know of the designer that much! I couldn’t wait for it to start and learn more about him and his collection!

I sat in the first row and realized I was near many famous public figures and celebrities, which told me how appreciated his work is in the public eye and to high profile people. To name a few, I spotted Harry Brant, Stephanie Seymour, Olivia Palermo and J. Alexander! I was so star struck but needed to keep my composure, which is why I never approached them. Looking back, I wish I had the courage to talk to them or at least take a pic with them like many others did.

The show started by playing Odyssey’s “Native New Yorker” and “New York City Girl,” which I thought couldn’t be more appropriate. Let’s take a look at this video recap of the runway show:

As Dennis said with his interview on WWD, “This New York City Girl collection, it’s all about every woman around the world, no matter where she’s from — Cairo to Dubai to Japan to Paris to São Paulo — everybody wants to be a New York City girl. When they come to New York, they think, “Do I look New York enough?” He also pointed out “The Real New York City Girl never lets the fashion wear her, she wears the fashion.” I think Dennis definitely accomplished his goal for this collection. Here are some of my favorites from this collection:

I love how the boots use the same fabric as the coat.

When I saw the back of this dress, I drooled because of how beautiful it was.

Loved how the whole outfit was one color. The wide belt in the same color palette with just the right amount of shine lifted the whole outfit up and pulled it together.

Again! Using sienna-colored python for the outfit and the shoe. It’s genius.

This is my absolute favorite piece among all! Can I have this one in my closet please!?

The show ended with Carol Alt, the iconic supermodel, walking out with Dennis while wearing this coppery ballroom skirt with an off-the-shoulder velvet top. It was absolutely GORGEOUS.

Within these 50 looks, Dennis covered different kinds of women who breath and live Manhattan. He created outfits from a daywear coat, kimono, trench coat to evening gowns with material from minks, sables, python to satin and styles from absolute luxury to funky uptown. It was a fashion and style feast to the eye.

Leaving the NYFW with Dennis’s show as my final show left me a very happy and content soul who is ready for more! Next up, Paris & Milan Fashion Weeks!
